L'épave du USS Général Hoyt S. Vandenberg repose sur un fond d'environ 140 pieds. Les plongeurs ont confirmé qu'il s’est posé, debout, la quille dans le sable.
Volontairement sabordé comme récif artificiel, le transport de troupe a coulé avec succès en deux minutes environ à 10:21, le 27 mai 2009. Après deux explosions sonores, les panaches de fumée rose se sont élevés dans le ciel et le navire a coulé lentement pour s’installer debout sur le fond. « Ca va bien, ça va bien, il coule bien droit », a dit le capitaine Sheri Lohr lors de la disparition du Vandenberg.
« Pour une fois, je suis sans voix. » Lohr est l'un des co-fondateurs de l'organisateur de projets de récifs artificiels dans les Keys.
Cette épave de 522 pieds de long est le deuxième plus grand récif artificiel du monde.
