Additional Information
On the eastern outskirts of Svendborg, just in front of the Hotel Christiansminde, lies hidden a dive site close to town. During the Second World War, German naval vessel often lay at anchor here, and the many artefacts that have been found here over time bear witness to this. Finds include a number of pieces of porcelain from this period, perhaps the remains of some washing up nobody wanted to do.
If there is no or little current, you can dive this around the site in a rectangular pattern. Otherwise you can walk a little way towards Svendborg, then drift with the current back eastwards. Svendborg Sound, of which this site is a part, can offer a deal of current. But if you study the tide tables currents can usually be avoided. The site offers moderate depths, down to 7 meters.
The occasional strong currents, together with the mixed gravel/sand bottom and the large brown algal seaweeds growing here, makes this site the perfect spot to meet plaice. Most of the time they lie buried in the sand, with only their eyes sticking up. Being so well camouflaged you really have to use your eyes to find them. They become more active during the night, and Christiansminde is also a fine site for night dives. Members of the pipefish family can also be seen here - and especially in the summer, these beautiful creatures can be seen everywhere when you are diving here.
The seabed is a delightful mixture of patches of gravel, mussel beds, brown algal seaweeds and eel grass. It is the perfect mix for a really good dive. Another creature that you will often find here in large numbers is the starfish. Some individuals can reach a really good size here, in places where food is plentiful.
