- I think it was the "Alice B" cargo ship which was hit by cannon fire around late 1989, during the Syrian bombardment of the Christian region in the war between the Aoun-led regiments of the Lebanese army and the Syrian army. I recall it was a pitch black night, around midnight in the summer of 1989. We stayed up late at my grandparents house on the Dbayeh town coast, my late uncle; my brother and I, listening to the distant sounds of rocket explosions, when all of a sudden, right in the direction where I was looking, a huge explosion mushroomed into the air, seconds before we heard the boom, to shortly afterwards hear the cannon that targeted it resonating from Beirut cape area. It was a location where a well known large cannon was located, often targeted loaded vessels trying to make port to deliver all kinds of goods to the besieged Christian region. We heard the next day that only two of the ship's crew members survived and swam to shore; no info on the number of crew members whom had died.
